Lulanda Village Forest Reserve is a pristine ecologically diverse Eastern Arc forest fragment located in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. The forest is located next to Lulanda village and is a community owned forest. This is a remote rural area set amongst tea plantations, a very tranquil location with excellent hiking and cultural opportunities.
A visit to Lulanda Forest Reserve is an authentic bush and cultural experience. It is a highly memorable location and a trip here is recommended in combination with Ruaha National Park and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Lying in the heart of the Udzungwas, Lulanda Forest Reserve provides a unique opportunity to experience the forest in its natural state.
Lulanda Village has worked in cooperation with Tanzania Forest Conservation Group to start replanting a corridor linking two Eastern Arc forest fragments. This project is one that you can directly help when you visit this area ? either just financially or more hands on by actually helping to plant trees. The need for firewood in the area has been addressed by establishing a nursery to plant a quick growing plantation forest on the other side of the ridge for this purpose.
TFCG has also introduced fuel efficient stoves to Lulanda Village and it is possible to see conservation in action here. The local tribe is the WaHehe and there are legends of Chief Mkwawa planning his ambushes on the Germans during the Maji Maji Rebellion in the forest here.
